Landscaping Tips

Here are a few tips to help answer some common landscaping questions.

Choosing the right plants depends on your climate zone, soil type, and the amount of sunlight your yard receives. Start by determining your USDA hardiness zone and soil pH. Select native or drought-tolerant plants that thrive in your region. Consider factors like maintenance requirements, bloom seasons, and plant spacing to ensure a balanced landscape.

Watering frequency depends on the season, soil type, and plant species. Generally, lawns need about 1–1.5 inches of water per week, including rainfall. Water deeply but less frequently to encourage deep root growth. Early morning is the best time to water to minimize evaporation and fungal diseases.

A combination of preventive and active measures works best. Use mulch to block sunlight and prevent weed germination. Hand-pull weeds regularly before they set seed. For larger infestations, consider applying pre-emergent herbicides in early spring and fall, and use post-emergent treatments for persistent weeds.

Conduct a soil test to determine nutrient levels and pH. Improve soil quality by adding organic matter such as compost, aged manure, or mulch. Aerate compacted soil to increase oxygen flow and root penetration. Adjust pH with lime (to raise) or sulfur (to lower) based on test results.

Consider native plants, drought-resistant perennials, and ornamental grasses that require minimal care. Use mulch and ground covers to reduce weeds and conserve moisture. Incorporate hardscaping elements like rock gardens, pathways, and decorative stones to reduce lawn area and maintenance needs.
